About
The Capri born
and based photographer found his early inspiration though the works of Cartier Bresson,
Robert Doisneau and Edouard Boubat, flipping through books at the Beaubourg library in Paris.
The very young man had taken this cultural trip thanks to a grant from the Villa San Michele /
Axel Munthe foundation. Later meaningful encounters with masters such as Franco Fontana,
Eikoh Hosoe, along with Umberto's tireless dedication to his art, will pave the way for
the self taught artist to establish himself as one the most prominent photographer in Capri.
Umberto's original primary focus has been his island of Capri. "Umberto D'Aniello's
photographs are the fruit of a deep and constant relationship with his island,
in an endless and never satisfied quest. This is why his photos are always miraculously
refreshing, even though some of them represent subjects that have been photographed
a million if not a billiard times and therefore could have seemed kitch or dejà vu."
(Corriere del Mezzogiorno / Francesco Durante).
Umberto was featured in the magazine Capri Review, along with Helmut Newton,
Mimmo Jodice, Fulvio Roiter etc.. as one of the greatest photographer to have shot Capri.
The artist has also applied his poetic neo classical lense to the glamour
and mystery of Paris, Venice, Rome, Positano, Havana etc...
His recent work is bringing his mystical delicate vision to its most minimalist state. His landscapes of Tuscany and Sicily are down to their purest simplicity, silence and texture. His pictures of the sea reach the spiritual abstraction of Rothko's paintings. His serie "apparenze" captures details to highlight the dream and the beyond.
